<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The curious engineer</h2>



In fact, expertise has always been at the centre of our service. It is epitomised by the development by Peter Hird Snr, who founded the business, of what has become known as the <a href="https://hird.co.uk/service-and-maintenance/the-hird-test-measuring-mewp-battery-endurance">Hird Test</a>.



Back in the 1980s, after a customer complained about the poor battery performance of an access platform, Peter Hird Snr set out to develop a method for checking how long a battery should last for every type and model of MEWP in the fleet.



It was the engineer in him. He wanted to know. That determination, led to a battery endurance test – the Hird Test – that is still used by manufacturers and rental specialists around the world.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading mt-2">Construction projects</h3>





The articulating boom lift delivers a maximum working height of 25.8m and a massive working outreach of 18.28m, making it a go-to platform for working on large construction projects.



Projects like building large warehouses – known in the trade as sheds – and logistics hubs are keeping the many of our cherry pickers busy, not least the <a href="https://hird.co.uk/products/boom-lifts/genie-z80-60">Genie Z80/60</a>.



It’s a diesel 4x4 rough terrain boom lift that is specifically designed to maximise the productivity of working at height for high reach applications.



Central to this is the Genie Z80/60’s FastMast system, which allows the operator to lower the basket to ground level without lowering the secondary boom.



This all but slices in half the time it takes for the basket to get down, for example to take on new tools or materials – and get back up to height to start the next task.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading mt-2">Planned maintenance</h3>





When it comes to large sheds, the <a href="https://hird.co.uk/products/boom-lifts/genie-z80-60">Genie Z80/60’s </a>capabilities make it ideal for supporting steel erection, installing of curtain walling, final fit-outs and pre-handover structural inspections.



Likewise, once logistics depots and warehouses are completed and operational, tall cherry pickers like the Z80/60 can be essential to carry out inspections and planned maintenance.



The <a href="https://hird.co.uk/products/diesel-boom-lift-hire">boom lift </a>has oscillating axles with full-time positive traction to assist in working across rough ground, plus four steering modes – front, rear, crab and coordinated – for accurate MEWP positioning in all conditions.



The turntable rotates continuously through 3600 while the platform rotates through 1600 and its vertical jib can also rotate through 1350. This means the operative can position the basket with millimetre precision.



As well as having an impressive maximum working height, the Genie Z80/60 also provides negative reach up to 4.83m below ground level at a horizontal reach of 12.19m.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading mt-2">Multiple sectors</h3>



Meanwhile, the platform’s reverse articulating secondary boom provides a maximum up and over clearance is 8.83m.



At this working height, the boom’s horizontal reach of over 17m, allowing work to be carried on structures set back from obstacles that could include up to two-storey buildings, pipework or machinery.

While hire customers from the construction sector make up the highest proportion of the MEWP’s users – it is also kept busy in other fields (literally) including wind turbine installation and maintenance, and petrochemical site maintenance.
