<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Once in a while, we take Product of the Month off piste to cover stuff that’s not made of metal and would hurt if it ran over your foot.</h2>



<p><strong>We’re doing it now, because our Product of the Month for April is Hird service.</strong></p>



<p>We think it’s important to remember, every now and then, that a product is not just the kit. It is also the smile on the face (seen or sensed over the phone), the helping hand, and the challenge overcome.</p>



<p>It’s a bit of a journey into the intangible. You can see a robotic glass lifter (as long as it is delivered on time). But service can be less easy to define.</p>



<p>So, here we are talking about elements of service that have a direct impact on our customers. That makes sure the kit is delivered on time, and the customer and their client are happy.</p>



<p>The point is, we can all be tempted by a sales pitch. By a bargain. By something new. Here at Hird, we know, in the world of industrial equipment hire, consistency counts.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The curious engineer</strong></h2>



<p><strong>In fact, expertise has always been at the centre of our service. It is epitomised by the development by Peter Hird Snr, who founded the business, of what has become known as the <a href="https://hird.co.uk/service-and-maintenance/the-hird-test-measuring-mewp-battery-endurance">Hird Test</a>.</strong></p>



<p>Back in the 1980s, after a customer complained about the poor battery performance of an access platform, Peter Hird Snr set out to develop a method for checking how long a battery should last for every type and model of MEWP in the fleet.</p>



<p>It was the engineer in him. He wanted to know. That determination, led to a battery endurance test – the Hird Test – that is still used by manufacturers and rental specialists around the world.</p>

Product of the Month – Hird Service

40 years of Hird – the lifting team that won’t let you down

<h2>Hird’s hire fleet of <a href="https://hird.co.uk/backend/products/mini-cranes">mini cranes</a> is going green by being supplied with HVO fuel which reduces CO<sub>2 </sub>emissions by up to 90%.</h2> </h2><p><strong>The move reflects the company’s determination to reduce its carbon footprint and help clients do the same by using the more eco-friendly fuel.</strong></p> <p><strong>John Wilding, Hird Director, said: </strong>“We want to be at the cutting edge of sustainable <a href="https://hird.co.uk/backend/products/mini-cranes"><strong>mini crane hire</strong></a>, which is why we’re switching to HVO power.</p> <p></br></p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://hird.co.uk/backend/products/tracked-maeda-mini-crane-hire/maeda-mc305/"><img loading="lazy" width="988" height="450" src="https://hird.co.uk/assets/uploads/2022/09/maeda-mc305-installing-a-new-boiler-tower-of-london.jpg" alt="maeda mc305-installing-a-new-boiler-tower-of-london"></a></figure> <p></br></p> <p>“Many of our customers want to make greener choices. Some sectors, such as construction, are well down the road of requiring reduced harmful emissions.</p> <p>“We want to do all we can to help curb the impact of climate change, reduce carbon footprints, and create healthier environments for everyone.”</p> <p></br></p> <h2><strong>Reduced emissions</strong></h2> <div class="row"><div class="halfCol col-md-6"> <p><strong>HVO is a fossil-free, paraffinic fuel made from waste fats and vegetable oils which are transformed into biofuel by hydrogenation.</strong></p> <p>It is a drop-in replacement for gas oil and red diesel and can be used in all diesel engines with no loss of performance. HVO can also be safely mixed with diesel, if necessary.</p> <p><strong>All diesel <a href="https://hird.co.uk/backend/products/mini-cranes">mini cranes</a>, including <a href="https://hird.co.uk/backend/products/tracked-maeda-mini-crane-hire">Maeda spider cranes</a>, hired by Hird will be fuelled with HVO.</strong></p> <p>Hird can also supply HVO fuel boxes for sale so clients can top up tanks.</p> <p>As well as significantly reducing CO<sub>2</sub> emissions, compared with diesel, HVO delivers a 30% reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions.</p> <p>It also generates up to 86% less particulate matter, which can cause asthma and heart and lung disease, including cancer.</p> </p> </div><div class="halfCol col-md-6"> <div class="wp-block-image"> <figure class="aligncenter size-full"><a href="https://hird.co.uk/backend/products/tracked-maeda-mini-crane-hiremaeda-mc285-3/"><img loading="lazy" width="506" height="700" src="https://hird.co.uk/assets/uploads/2022/09/maeda-mc285-mini-crane-and-sk200-stone-vac-hull-project.jpg" alt="maeda-mc285-mini-crane-and-sk200-stone-vac-hull-project"></a></figure> </div> </div></div>  <div class="clearboth"></div> <p></br></p> <h2><strong>Sustainability standard</strong></h2> <p><strong>HVO biodegrades within 51 days and is odourless, which makes it a particularly useful fuel to use when working in environments close to public spaces, for example at events.</strong></p> <div class="row"><div class="halfCol col-md-6"> <p>The HVO fuel selected by Hird is cleaner than both diesel and FAME (fatty acid methyl ester) biodiesel</p> <p><strong>It complies with EN15940 and ASTM D97 5 and is ISCC-approved (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification).</strong></p> <p>Also, unlike biodiesel, the HVO does not deteriorate over time and can be used at temperature extremes.</p> <p><strong>Hird is also leading the way in adding all-electric machines to its mini crane hire fleet.</strong></p> <p>The latest to arrive is the new lithium battery <a href="https://hird.co.uk/backend/products/tracked-maeda-mini-crane-hire/maeda-mc285-3-all-electric/"><strong>Maeda MC285-3 electric spider crane</strong></a>. Hird mini crane hire fleet goes green with advanced HVO fuel

<h2>If there was a special forces regiment made up only of spider cranes – stay with us – what spider crane would definitely be featured?</h2> <p><strong>Most experts agree that many Special Air Service soldiers do not look much different to other fit men.</strong></p> <p>It is when they are asked to do something physically extraordinary that they reveal their great strength and stamina.</p> <p><strong>Well, the same goes for our product of the month for February.</strong></p> </p> <h3><strong>Spider cranes with hidden power </strong></h3> <div class="row"><div class="halfCol col-md-6"> <p><p><strong>The <a href="https://hird.co.uk/backend/products/unic-spider-crane-hire/unic-urw-295/">UNIC URW-295 spider crane</a> looks, at first glance, like other similar-sized spider cranes available for hire from Hird, such as the <a href="https://hird.co.uk/backend/products/unic-spider-crane-hire/unic-urw-094/">UNIC URW-094</a> and the UNIC URW-095.</strong></p> <p>But the UNIC URW-295 tracked spider crane is the special forces solider of mini cranes, because – with a maximum safe working load of 2.9 tonnes – it has nearly three times the lifting capacity of its namesakes.</p> <p>A lot is talked about the SAS. All this is inconveniently contradicted by the fame of Lofty Large – one of the most famous ever SAS soldiers, and at 6ft 6ins in his desert boots, one of the tallest.</p> <h3><strong>Mini crane with explosive lifting performance</strong></h3> <p><strong>But the point can be made – you do not have to be big to be effective. And that certainly applies to the UNIC URW-295 spider crane.</strong></p> <p>As mentioned, at 600mm wide, 1375mm wide and 2690mm long, it has the same dimensions as the <strong><a href="https://hird.co.uk/backend/products/unic-spider-crane-hire/unic-urw-095/">UNIC URW-095 mini crane</a></strong>, which has a max SWL of 0.995 tonnes – but can lift nearly three tonnes.</p> <p><strong>The </strong><a href="https://hird.co.uk/backend/products/unic-spider-crane-hire/unic-urw-295/"><strong>UNIC URW-295 spider crane</strong></a><strong> has a maximum tip height of 8.8 metres – eat your heart out – and a maximum radius of 8.41 metres.</strong></p> <p>This impressive performance makes the mini tracked crane a go-to machine for many lifting projects including steel erection, facilities maintenance and<br /> glass lifting.</p> <p><strong>To keep the special forces analogy going, like an SAS soldier with his array of weapons and gadgets – this spider crane can be fitted with a wide range of attachments for specialist lifting.</strong></p> <figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" width="750" height="450" src="https://hird.co.uk/assets/uploads/2022/09/Special-Air-Services.jpg" alt="" ></figure> <h3><strong>Lifting equipment hire options</strong></h3> <p>These include vacuum lifters, also available for hire from Hird, for installing glass, plasterboard, glass-reinforced concrete panels, and sheets of metal or plastic with military precision.</p> <p><strong>The </strong><a href="https://hird.co.uk/backend/products/unic-spider-crane-hire/unic-urw-295/"><strong>UNIC URW-295 spider crane</strong></a><strong> can even extend its capabilities,  with height and reach extended with the fitting of a fly gib or a searcher hook</strong>.</p> <p>Just like SAS soldiers (have we overdone the comparison yet?), staying safe while faced by multiple potential hazards is also important for the UNIC URW-295 spider crane.</p> <p><strong>It has load monitoring fitted as standard, which incorporates a m safe load indicator to prevent the mini crane operating outside its safe working envelope. The crane also has an over-winding alarm.</strong></p> <p>And being narrow and compact enough to be taken through a single doorway, it is the mini crane you would want with you in a tight spot. <p>Last year we told you that Hird was supplying <strong>Valla compact mini cranes</strong> and <strong>Unic mini cranes to carry</strong> out glazing work installing all of the 11,500 glass panels at the prestigious <strong>‘Shard’</strong>, part of the New London Bridge Quarter development underway in the nation’s capital, including the full London Bridge station upgrade.</p> <p>The <strong>scissor lift hire</strong>, <strong>boom lift hire</strong> and <strong>pick and carry crane hire</strong> specialists from Hull, Yorkshire, has been asked to supply <strong>Powered Access</strong> and additional <strong>Spider Cranes</strong> as work begins on the first phase of five giant canopies from its Southern hire depot based in Redhill, Surrey, just outside London.</p> <p>Hird has also been supplying the project with a wide range of <strong>glass lifting equipment</strong> and <strong>accessories</strong>, such as <strong>A-frames</strong>, and <strong>glazing robots</strong> to make the building progress both safer and quicker, as well as our <strong>UNIC 095</strong>, <strong>UNIC 295</strong> &amp; <strong>376</strong> models working on the London Bridge Station upgrade.</p> <p><b>John Wilding, Hird’ Project Manager at the Shard</b>, said: “We have delivered a full glazing and mini crane package for the internal &amp; external work at the Shard project. <h2>If you want to plant a 1.3 tonne tree in a giant pot that is up a flight of steps, through three double doors, and across a courtyard that has a low weight load suspended floor who are you going to call?</h2> <p>That was the challenge facing a leading corporate plant provider when it was commissioned to create the planting for a new office block in Dorking, Surrey – and it called lifting specialist Hird Group.</p> <h2>Free site survey supports crane lift</h2> <p><strong>Hird Lifting Depot Manager James Carr said: </strong>“As part of our service, we offer a free site survey. This helps both our clients and us, as a lifting equipment hire provider. In this case, it allowed us to provide precisely the right equipment, and propose an effective and safe lift plan.</p> <p>“We had to break down the lift into the different tasks, starting with getting the tree off the lorry, and finishing with it in its pot, looking glorious.</p> <p>“Along the way, a careful assessment of the risks, and the methodology for mitigating them, helped us get the job safely done in half a day. That meant our client’s costs were controlled and disruption was minimal.”</p> <h2>Two mini cranes – one crane operator</h2> <p><strong>The office owner had wanted an impressive feature tree to create just the right look and feel in the courtyard at the centre of the new building.</strong></p> <p>The answer was to use two tracked spider cranes – a <a href="https://hird.co.uk/backend/products/unic-spider-crane-hire/unic-urw-506/"><strong>UNIC 506</strong></a> and a <a href="https://hird.co.uk/backend/products/tracked-maeda-mini-crane-hire/maeda-mc285-2/"><strong>Maeda MC285</strong></a>, controlled by a Hird crane operator. They completed different lifting tasks needed to get the tree into its pot.</p> <div class="row"><div class="halfCol col-md-6"> <p> First, the <strong>UNIC 506 spider crane</strong>, which has a maximum safe working load (SWL) of 3 tonnes, was used to lift the tree from the lorry up on to the main entrance level above a flight of steps.<br /> <a href="https://hird.co.uk/backend/products/unic-spider-crane-hire/unic-urw-506/"><img loading="lazy" width="225" height="300"  src="https://hird.co.uk/assets/uploads/2022/09/urw_506_spider_mini_crane-225x300.jpg" alt="urw_506_spider_mini_crane" ></a></p> </div><div class="halfCol col-md-6"> <p> It then lifted the <strong>Maeda MC285 spider crane</strong> up to the same level. The tree was taken through to the court yard some 20 metres away through the building on three pallet trucks.</p> <p><a href="https://hird.co.uk/backend/products/tracked-maeda-mini-crane-hire/maeda-mc285-2/"><img loading="lazy" width="300" height="274"  src="https://hird.co.uk/assets/uploads/2022/09/maeda-mc285-mini-crane-potm-round-up-300x274.png" alt="maeda-mc285-mini-crane-potm-round-up" ></a></p> </div></div>  <div class="clearboth"></div> <p>&nbsp;</p> <h2>Narrow spider crane essential</h2> <p><strong>The <a href="https://hird.co.uk/backend/products/tracked-maeda-mini-crane-hire/maeda-mc285-2/"><strong>Maeda MC285 spider crane</strong></a> was then driven through to the lift location by the same route. At only 750mm wide with outriggers stowed, it could quite easily be guided through three double doors.</strong></p> <p>The next challenge was to set up the mini crane for a safe lift. The courtyard had a suspended stone tile floor which would not take the weight of the crane while lifting the tree.<br /> <strong><br /> James Carr, who was the Appointed Person for the lift, said:</strong> “Our solution was to lay plywood to spread the load of the crane and protect flooring in the building and in the courtyard.</p> <p>“We then lifted out floor tiles at the points where the outriggers needed to be placed. We also put down outrigger pads to spread the load and ensure a secure footing for the lift.</p> <p>“The weight of the load, and the position of the pot it was being lifted into meant the spider crane had to be positioned precisely, with the lift radius staying within the area of the two front outriggers.”</p> <p><img loading="lazy"  src="https://hird.co.uk/assets/uploads/2022/09/maeda-mc285-lifting-tree-courtyard.jpg" alt="maeda-mc285-lifting-tree-courtyard" width="600" height="450" ></p> <h2>Impressive spider crane – impressive tree</h2> <p>With these technical constraints fully accounted for, the lift went ahead smoothly and safely. The tree was placed in its pot, under the client’s guidance, and looked just as impressive as was hoped.</p> <p>The <a href="https://hird.co.uk/backend/products/tracked-maeda-mini-crane-hire/maeda-mc285-2/"><strong>Maeda MC285 spider crane</strong></a> (maximum SWL 2.82T) could then be derigged and driven back to the main entrance, where the <a href="https://hird.co.uk/backend/products/unic-spider-crane-hire/unic-urw-506/"><strong>UNIC 506 mini crane</strong></a> could be used to lift it back down to street level.</p> <p><strong>James Carr said: </strong>“Our experience, and the mini cranes and lifting equipment we can deploy, make these confined space lifts feasible.
