City of Culture will give Hull huge lift says Hird
Hull will get a huge lift from being the UK City of Culture in 2017, says mini crane, powered access and glass handing company Hird.
The company was founded in Hull more than 25 years ago and has its headquarters in the city, from where it offers a national lifting and materials handling service.
The announcement that Hull had beaten Leicester, Dundee and Swansea Bay to the honour was made on November 20th 2013. More than 50 people work at Hird’s HQ in English Street, close to Hull Docks, and all have been inspired by the announcement, says Managing Director Phil Hird.
He added:
“Being City of Culture in 2017 will be a big boost for the city. Hull has plenty to be proud of and it will be a chance to show off our success.
“Culture isn’t just about theatre and the arts. It’s about who we are and how we go about doing things as a community and in business.
“As a well-established Hull business, we are definitely ready and willing to play our part in using City of Culture to celebrate and promote Hull as a city around the world.”
Hird is the UK and Ireland distributor for Valla mini cranes and Winlet glazing robots. The company now offers spider cranes, pick and carry cranes, access platforms, such as cherry pickers and scissor lifts, and glass handling equipment for sale and for hire across the UK.
Notably, Hird has grown its business rapidly in the South East, by opening a depot at Redhill, Surrey, less than 20 miles from the centre of London.
Hird mini crane and glazing robot expert Carl Cooper is also an Assistant District Commissioner in the Scouting movement in Hull and hopes to be involved in planning City of Culture events for young people.
The media has already focused on the Poet Laureate Philip Larkin, who worked as a librarian at Hull University, the Hull Truck Theatre Company and the Ferens Art Gallery.
Carl said:
“Everyone at Hull was excited when the announcement was made. It’s already got us talking about how we can take part.
“Hull has a lot to offer, in terms of its history, its current success and what it can contribute in the future and Hird will be proud to help tell that story.”
