<h2><strong>Zero-emissions all-electric Maeda mini cranes supplied by Hird are playing a key role in glazing one of the biggest tall building developments ever given planning permission by the City of London.</strong></h2>

<strong>Sustainable lifting was one of the key advantages that led to the two <a href="https://hird.co.uk/backend/products/tracked-maeda-mini-crane-hire/maeda-mc285-3-all-electric/">Maeda MC-285CB-3 ECO spider cranes</a> being selected to support the glazing teams working on 40 Leadenhall Street.</strong>

The 34-storey glass-clad building recalls the classic north American skyscrapers of the early 20<sup>th</sup> Century and has already been dubbed Gotham City.

<h2><strong>Lithium electric battery</strong></h2>
<strong>The structure, which will accommodate 10,000 people when complete, has been carefully designed to respect historic surroundings, most importantly views if St Paul’s Cathedral.</strong>

The lithium battery powered <a href="https://hird.co.uk/backend/products/tracked-maeda-mini-crane-hire/maeda-mc285-3-all-electric/"><strong>Maeda MC285CB-3 ECO mini cranes</strong></a> are being used to install 3.7m-long window units, each weighing 450kg, being fitted on all floors, except some areas on level one.

The standard procedure has been for the Maeda mini cranes to pick up the glazed units, which have built-in lifting points, from the floor below and then lower them to be installed on the next floor down.

<h2><strong>Excellent negative duty</strong></h2>
<strong>The Maeda MC285CB-3 ECO spider crane has a maximum safe working load of 2.82t, a maximum working height of 8.7m and a maximum working radius of 8.2m.</strong>

The mini crane can be fitted with an 850kg searcher hook and can be wirelessly remote controlled to allow the operator to control lifts from the optimum position.

It weighs 1995kg and has variable outriggers to make best use of space, especially in constrained and uneven environments. All functions can be controlled via a 7-inch colour digital screen.

The Maeda MC285CB-3 ECO spider crane delivers excellent negative lift duties, from a 4-fall lift with a maximum SWL of 2.82kg down to 10.1m to a single fall lift with a SWL of 900kg down to 100m.

<h2><strong>Iconic buildings</strong></h2>
<strong>Its extremely smooth controls are ideally-suited to glass installation where glazing units must be placed with millimetre precision, and when productivity for such a large project is a key concern.</strong>

Hird can also provide an <a href="https://hird.co.uk/backend/products/tracked-maeda-mini-crane-hire/maeda-mc305-all-electric/"><strong>all-electric Maeda MC305 spider crane</strong></a> with a maximum SWL of 2.98t, a maximum working height of 12.5m and a maximum working radius of 12.16m.

<strong>40 Leadenhall Street is located in the City of London’s insurance district next to three other iconic tall buildings – the Cheesegrater, the Walkie Talkie and the Gerkin – all of which were built with the help of Hird lifting equipment.</strong>

The skyscraper will have 909,600ft² (84,500m²) of floor space, of which 15% will be open to public access, with shops, bars and restaurants on lower floors.

All electric Maeda crane is glass lifting hero in ‘Gotham City’

<h2 id="there-is-no-room-to-rest-on-your-laurels-in-the-lifting-world-which-is-why-our-product-of-the-month-for-february-is-the-maeda-cc985s-1-mini-crawler-crane">There is no room to rest on your laurels in the lifting world. Which is why our Product of the Month for February is the Maeda CC985S-1 mini crawler crane.</h2>
<strong>Having no room is, in fact, the central point here. Because the Maeda CC985S-1 mini crawler crane is designed to operate over difficult and sensitive ground where space is at a premium.</strong>

And there is another central point (let’s assume we can have two). It is perfect for lifts where being able to lift and be mobile in constrained space are both very helpful features.

Hird is already one of the UK’s leading Maeda hire specialists for mini spider cranes. The key attributes of these machines is their ability to move through narrow spaces to reach lifting locations.

Once there, outriggers are deployed to provide the stability needed to allow our spider cranes to deliver their phenomenal lifting power.
<h2 id="lifting-on-the-move"><strong>Lifting on the move</strong></h2>
<strong>The Maeda CC985S-1 mini crawler crane provides Hird crane hire customers will something a little different.</strong>

It is not quite as compact as a spider crane in stowed set up. But it does not need to deploy outriggers to carry out lifts. This means it requires no additional space outside its footprint to operate.

On top of that, the operator can reposition the mini crawler crane to make sure it is in precisely the right location to carry out a lift. Or the crane can be moved quickly to carry out multiple lifts.

And, because the Maeda CC985S-1 mini crawler crane also has pick and carry duties, the operator has freedom to lift a load and reposition the mini crane before lowering it.

<h2 id="compact-and-capable"><strong>Compact and capable</strong></h2>
<strong>Hird’s Maeda CC985S-1 has a maximum safe working load of 4.9 tonnes (at 2.1m) and can lift 200kg at its maximum radius of 14.67m.</strong>

It is just 2320mm wide and 2833mm long, giving it true compact crane status, especially when you consider the weight of the loads it can lift.

Also, the mini crane has close to zero tail swing, adding to its credentials for lifting in constrained space. This is increasingly a concern on modern inner-city construction sites where space is at a premium.

The new mini crawler crane is also perfectly designed to support the latest construction techniques, including off-site construction – the process of building modular units at a different location and bringing them to a construction site for installation.

The Maeda crawler crane has a maximum lifting height of 16.5m which increases to 20.2m with the use of the optional fly jib.

As already mentioned, its 2,000kg pick and carry duty makes lifting even more flexible in constrained space. Also, its rubber tracks make light work of rough or muddy terrain, and assist with lifting across low load bearing and sensitive ground, such as paved and grassed areas.

<h2 id="power-and-safety"><strong>Power and safety</strong></h2>
<strong>The Maeda CC985S-1 mini crawler crane is also packed with smart features that make lifting easier, safer and more productive.</strong>

They include a 7-inch multi-function touch-screen monitor for controlling the crane’s functions. A rear view camera makes it easier for the operator to reposition the crane and keep a look out for hazards.

The mini crawler crane has a powerful two-speed winch with a hydraulic disc brake for ultimate load control. Among the many safety features is a slew restriction device to allow the operator to set safe working parameters.

<h2 id="multiple-lifting-roles"><strong>Multiple lifting roles</strong></h2>
<strong>One of the first lifting projects our new Maeda mini crawler crane was sent out on was installing glass at a new art college in Wakefield, West Yorkshire.</strong>

It was ideal for the task because it was used to install glass at multiple locations across the site with a <a href="https://hird.co.uk/backend/products/vacuum-lifters/woods-powr-grip-mrta8/"><strong>Powr-Grip MRTA8 glass vacuum lifter</strong></a>, also hired from Hird.

The Maeda CC985S-1 mini crane is also ideally suited to supporting steel erection, cladding installation, lifting machinery across difficult terrain, for example when installing equipment in remote sewage pumping stations or along gas pipelines, and artwork installation.
