Product of the Month – Oktopus CBL8000 counterbalance lifting beam
If someone tells you their success at lifting large sheets of glass or cladding panels into place hangs in the balance – just point them in the direction of Hird.
We’ve just added our largest ever counterbalance lifting beam to our hire fleet – and it is designed to cope with the most challenging façade and glazing installation projects.
Our first Product of the Month for 2022 is the Oktopus CBL8000 counterbalance lifting beam, with its maximum lifting capacity of a whopping 8,000kg.
It is one of six counterbalance lifting beams available for hire from Hird.
Simplifying lifting
What is also special about these lifting devices is that they can be used to position loads with complete precision under overhangs.
For the Oktopus CBL8000, and three other machines in the Hird counterbalance lifting beam hire fleet, the overhangs can be as deep as 3m.
This makes the Oktopus CBL8000 the perfect lifting solution for installing glass, cladding, steelwork or even balconies on buildings with overhanging roofs or soffits. Or where supporting structures, such as scaffolding, makes a more conventional lift impossible.
The versatile counterbalance lifting beam can be used in conjunction with mobile cranes, mini cranes or tower cranes to complete lifts that would otherwise be very difficult indeed.
Its capabilities mean far more complex lifting solutions are no longer needed, saving money and time in completing construction or maintenance tasks.
How does a counterbalance lifting beam work?
The Oktopus CBL8000 achieves what no other lifting equipment can by the clever use of computer-controlled counterbalance weights.
The weight of the load is balanced by a set of weights that are moved along the beam with a battery-powered electric motor, guided by a wireless remote control.
This allows the load to be held in position completely safely while being guided underneath an overhanging structure.
Growing demand
As the incorporation of glass and other cladding materials in tall buildings becomes ever more common, there is a growing need for a heavyweight counterbalance lifting beam like the Oktopus CBL8000.
The loads it can carry are certainly extraordinary. Putting its performance into context, the maximum weight it can lift is equivalent to 16 Alaskan moose, 8 saltwater crocodiles, 4 fully-grown hippos, or 2 Indian elephants.

= 500kg
16 moose
= 8,000kg
1 crocodile
= 1,000kg
8 crocodiles

Counterbalance sliding scale
The counterbalance lifting beam can used in conjunction with a wide range of other lifting equipment, including below-the-hook glass vacuum lifters, also available from Hird.
They include the Kappel DSZ3 slimline with a maximum lifting capacity of 1,500gh, the Hydraulica 2100 Curved, which can lift convex and concave glass panels weighing up to 2100kg, and the Hydraulica 3500, which can hold loads of up to 3,500kg.
