Where there’s muck there’s a Maeda mini crane

A Hird Maeda mini crane has proven to be the perfect lifting equipment for helping turning cow poo into biogas.

The Maeda MC305 tracked spider crane moo-oved pipe work and machinery into place during construction of a methane plant at a dairy farm near Telford in Shropshire.

Extracting methane gas from cow, pig and chicken slurry has become big business and is turning many farms into mini power stations.

For example, every tonne of cow slurry generates 98.5 cubic metres of biogas which, in turn, is enough to heat 17 average homes for a day. Some farmers generate as much income from gas as from milk.

Large plant and equipment needed to create the biogas plant was lifted into place with a 500-tonne mobile crane.

But once those lifts were completed, contractors needed the much nimbler Maeda MC305 spider crane, supplied by Hird, to finish the job off.

The mini crane was compact enough to be tracked between tanks and pipework and then set up in confined space to lift the final elements of the poo-to-gas plant into place.

The spider crane has a maximum safe working load of 2.98 tonnes and a maximum working radius of 12.16 metres. Yet when stowed for tracking it is just 1.2 metres wide.

It can be operated as a sit-on mini crane or with a wireless remote control to allow the operator to position themselves exactly where they need to be to execute the safest and most effective lift.

The mini crane is also packed with features, including a programmable moment limiter and tilt and sensor alarms, to make sure lifts go smoothly within safe limits.

As well as being ideal for these construction tasks, Maeda MC305 mini cranes can be combined with attachments to carry out specific lifting tasks across many sectors, including facilities management and manufacturing.

These include glass vacuum lifters from Hird’s wide range of glass lifting equipment, including the Wirth mini crane glazing manipulator, capable of lifting loads up to 600kg.
