Hird mini crane hire fleet goes green with advanced HVO fuel
Hird’s hire fleet of mini cranes is going green by being supplied with HVO fuel which reduces CO2 emissions by up to 90%.
The move reflects the company’s determination to reduce its carbon footprint and help clients do the same by using the more eco-friendly fuel.
John Wilding, Hird Director, said: “We want to be at the cutting edge of sustainable mini crane hire, which is why we’re switching to HVO power.
“Many of our customers want to make greener choices. Some sectors, such as construction, are well down the road of requiring reduced harmful emissions.
“We want to do all we can to help curb the impact of climate change, reduce carbon footprints, and create healthier environments for everyone.”
Reduced emissions
HVO is a fossil-free, paraffinic fuel made from waste fats and vegetable oils which are transformed into biofuel by hydrogenation.
It is a drop-in replacement for gas oil and red diesel and can be used in all diesel engines with no loss of performance. HVO can also be safely mixed with diesel, if necessary.
All diesel mini cranes, including Maeda spider cranes, hired by Hird will be fuelled with HVO.
Hird can also supply HVO fuel boxes for sale so clients can top up tanks.
As well as significantly reducing CO2 emissions, compared with diesel, HVO delivers a 30% reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions.
It also generates up to 86% less particulate matter, which can cause asthma and heart and lung disease, including cancer.
Sustainability standard
HVO biodegrades within 51 days and is odourless, which makes it a particularly useful fuel to use when working in environments close to public spaces, for example at events.
The HVO fuel selected by Hird is cleaner than both diesel and FAME (fatty acid methyl ester) biodiesel
It complies with EN15940 and ASTM D97 5 and is ISCC-approved (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification).
Also, unlike biodiesel, the HVO does not deteriorate over time and can be used at temperature extremes.
Hird is also leading the way in adding all-electric machines to its mini crane hire fleet.
The latest to arrive is the new lithium battery Maeda MC285-3 electric spider crane. Hird also has a large range of battery-powered Valla pick and carry cranes.
Go green instantly
However, HVO is an excellent way to instantly improve sustainable lifting while new electric cranes are coming onto the market, said John Wilding.
He added: “Diesel engines and diesel-powered plant will be with us for some time to come. Switching to HVO is a practical way to contribute to more eco-friendly ways of working right away.”
