The Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) provides skills cards for the plant sector of the construction and allied industries.

The Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) provides skills cards for the plant sector of the construction and allied industries. It was launched in 2003 and since then over 300,000 cards have been issued. It is the largest and most highly recognised card scheme for the construction plant industry. It helps to prove workers’ operating skills and health and safety awareness.

Successful candidates on CPCS tests receive a red CPCS Trained Operators Card, valid for a period of 2 years. Candidates are required to achieve the appropriate NVQ within the 2-year life of the red CPCS Trained Operators Card to progress on to a blue CPCS Competent Operator Card.

CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) Test

All candidates participating on CPCS Technical Tests need to successfully complete the appropriate CITB Health, Safety and Environment must be current and in date, within the previous 23 months before the course start date. The CITB HS&E Test is an important way for construction workers to show they can work safely. For employers, having workers who have passed the CITB HS&E test is assurance that their workforce can keep themselves and those around them safe.

The CITB HS&E test forms a key part of the requirement to obtain a construction industry scheme card.
