Tandem Valla mini crane lift beats food factory access challenge
A machinery lifting and moving team from Hird has helped a food factory install a new boiler with a tandem lift using two eco-friendly electric Valla pick and carry cranes.
The Valla 35E and Valla 22E mini cranes moved the cylindrical boiler through a doorway with just centimetres to spare each side and above.
But even before the industrial pick and carry cranes could be put to work, they had to be lifted to the back of the plant room with a 100t mobile crane.
Crane access challenge
Hird completed the complex lift and machinery moving project in one day at the poultry processing plant in Hull, East Yorkshire.
Access had been restricted because of additional plant installed after the building had been constructed, requiring the use of the mobile crane.
The boiler vessel, which weighed two tonnes, was lifting to the plant room in the same way.
The Valla 22E pick and carry crane backed into the plant room lifting the bottom of the vessel while the Valla 35E followed it in, lifting the top.
Valla flexible lifting
Hird Technical Manager Jake Coulman, the appointed person for the lift, said: “The height of the vessel meant it had to be tipped on its side to get through the door, which is why the tandem lift was needed.
“Once the vessel was inside, the Valla 22E lowered it onto machinery moving skates. This allowed the crane to be moved out of the way.
“Then the Valla 35E’s boom was telescoped out to lift the vessel upright onto the skates and chocks. The Valla 35E could then be used to lift the vessel again and place it where it was being installed.
“We’re pleased to say our client was delighted with the result. Without the flexibility provided by the Valla pick and cranes, there was no other way of getting the vessel in without opening the roof.
“As electric pick and carry cranes, they were also ideal for indoor lifting, with zero fumes and low noise, especially in a clean operational environment like a food factory.”
Hydraulic fly jib
The Valla 22E mini crane has a maximum safe working load of 2.25t, a maximum working height of 4.3m and a maximum radius of 3m. The crane weighs 1950kg.
The pick and carry crane can also be supplied with a hydraulic fly jib with a maximum SWL of 1.0t, extending the working height to 5m and the radius to 3.5m, which is especially helpful where height above the hook is restricted.
The Valla 35E has a maximum SWL of 3.5t, a maximum working height of 6.5t and a maximum radius of 4.8t. As with the Valla 22E, it is fitted with non-marking tyres for indoor working in clean environments.
Mini crane hire fleet
Hird provides contract lifting and machinery moving services across all sectors, including engineering, manufacturing, transport, dockyard maintenance, and energy generation.
The company’s mini crane hire fleet includes a wide range of Valla pick and carry cranes and Maeda spider cranes which can be supplied anywhere in the UK through our regional operating hubs.
