Oktopus glass manipulator goes to Greenwich
A Hird glass lifting team has been supporting contractors refurbishing an office building in Greenwich, South East London, with a Wirth Oktopus GL-CC777600 glass manipulator.
Used in conjunction with a Maeda mini crane, the Oktopus is excellent for removing installing glazing panels, especially where space is confined, or obstacles need to be manoeuvred around.
The first task was to remove the current glass panels covering a staircase serving the office block. The Maeda mini crane, with a maximum working height of 16.8 metres, was ideal for this task.
The new glass panels were attached to the manipulator and lifted from the glass trolley. The Oktopus vacuum lifter has dual, independent vacuum circuits with two vacuum reserve tanks and two non-return valves to ensure safe lifting at all times.
The Maeda mini crane lifted the panels up to the installation position with ease. Electric-powered, the cane is emission-free. The key issue on this site was steel columns in front the glazing. But, with the glass lifting manipulator, the glass could be tilted and turned in just the right direction to ensure it could be moved into place.
Ready for installation, the glass panel can be moved into place with complete precision, thanks to radio remote controls, allowing the glass lifting engineer to work closely with colleagues to ensure the panel is properly in place.
