Glass and curtain wall installation contractors can obtain the training their teams need for a full range of lifting equipment at Hird’s London Redhill operational hub.

Hird’s respected and extensive training division gives customers a complete lifting service – with a mini crane and glass lifting equipment hire service, plus training needed to use them.
Lifting training for London and South-East
The compact crane, vacuum lifter and vacuum robot training courses are also delivered for contractors who operate their own equipment or hire it from other sources, says Hird Training Manager Gavin Rymer.
He adds: “Hird’s training service can act as an integral part of our wider equipment hire and sales service or as a respected stand-alone provider of skills training needed by businesses across the UK.
“Given the location of our London Redhill hub, we’re trusted to provide training for curtain wall and glass installation specialists working on the largest high-rise construction and maintenance projects in the capital.”
Hird Training has an experienced and skilled training instructor permanently based at Hird London Redhill, allowing courses to be delivered there Monday to Friday, with Saturday sessions also available, subject to instructor availability.
Five main types of lifting training courses
- CPCS compact crane training
CPCS A66 Compact Crane (A Static Stabilisers)
This is a three-day course – with a maximum of three candidates per course – for operating mini cranes that lift when stationary with stabilisers deployed, the most common type being spider cranes.
Course content includes:
- Legislation, standards and guidance
- Roles and responsibilities
- Maintenance, inspection and pre-checks
- Risk assessment
- Manoeuvring in confined spaces
- Safe operation of the crane with & without loads
Candidates must have passed a CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test (Operatives test entry level) within the previous 23 months. Successful candidates receive a red CPCS trained operators card, which is valid for two years.
CPCS A66 Compact Crane (B Mobile Industrial)
This is a three-day course – with a maximum of three candidates per course – for operating compact industrial cranes, primarily pick and carry cranes like Valla cranes available for hire from Hird.
Course content includes:
- Legislation, standards and guidance
- Roles and responsibilities
- Components and terminology
- Proximity hazards
- Selection and use of lifting accessories
- Safe operation of crane with and without loads
This is a one-day course – for a maximum three candidates per course – giving instruction on the use of vacuum robots, such as the Winlet glass lifter vacuum robots offered for hire and sale by Hird.
Course content includes:
- Introduction to vacuum robots
- Vacuum robot controls
- Pre-use operational checks
- Weight assessment
- Signalling techniques
- Lifting equipment
- Operator safety code
This is a one-day course – for up to three candidates per course – giving instruction on the use of counterbalance floor cranes, such as Wienold Lifte, KS Schulten and Glasboy machines offered for hire by Hird.
Course content includes:
- Legislation, standards and guidance
- Operation of the counterbalance floor crane loaded and unloaded
- Steering
- Hydraulic system
- Signalling techniques
- Lifting equipment
This is a one-day course – for a maximum of 6 candidates per course – for anyone required to use below-the-hook vacuum lifters, such as ones in Hird’s hire fleet, including Wood’s Powr-Grip, Kappel, and Wirth lifters.
Course content includes:
- Introduction to vacuum lifters
- Pre-use operational checks
- Operation of the vacuum lifter loaded and unloaded
- Signalling techniques
- Operator safety code
- Weight assessment
Hird’s training courses are valuable for operatives with a wide range of experience, from none at all, to experienced lifting technicians who would benefit from having accredited training, says Gavin Rymer.
He adds: “Operatives who are new to lifting will clearly benefit from training. In fact, most responsible contractors see training as essential to deliver lifting services safely and effectively.
“However, more experienced operatives often benefit from our courses, either to refresh their certification, or to confirm best practice. Also, an increasing number of main contractors require proof of operational certification before they will allow teams onto work site.”
