Training Focus – PASMA towers for users course
Our training focus for October is Hird’s PASMA towers for users training course, not least because us human beings love a tower.
For nearly 4,000 years, the tallest object constructed by humans, anywhere in the world, was the 146m Great Pyramid in Egypt.
Now, of course, the sky’s barely the limit. The tallest building in the world is the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. It is 826m, or 2,717ft tall.
Us humans just love getting off the ground. It gives us a new perspective, it challenges our senses and it gives us a thrill.
These disorientating effects contribute to making working at height such a hazard, even at low height.
A fall from just a couple of metres off the ground is potentially fatal.
PASMA training – importance
Which is why courses like our PASMA towers for users training is so important. The course is designed to instruct operatives on the safe use of mobile access towers.
These are structures, usually made from aluminium, that can be relatively quickly built from component parts to create a low level working platform.
Thousands of these platforms are used every day across the UK during building construction, maintenance and inspection.
The Prefabricated Access Suppliers’ & Manufacturers’ Association (PASMA) has devised course to support the safe use of these important working at height aids.
And Hird is a PASMA approved training member, so our clients can trust that we will deliver PASMA training courses to a high standard.
PASMA towers for users course
The training course is designed for operatives who are responsible for the assembly, dismantling, alteration, moving and inspection of mobile access towers.
The key learning objective is to learn how to complete these tasks without risk of personal injury to the delegate or others.
No formal qualification is needed to attend the course but having a basic understanding of working at height issues would be helpful.
Course content – what delegates learn
The PASMA towers for users courses lasts one day, and will take a minimum of six hours to complete.
The training includes theoretical class-based components and practical training and assessment.
Topics included in the PASMA course include:
- Legislation Regulations and Guidance affecting working at height with mobile towers
- PASMA Code of Practice
- Product Standards EN 1004:2004
- Assembling, altering and dismantling towers incorporating current best practice for fall protection
- Inspection of completed mobile access towers
- Completion of tower inspection records
- Hazards affecting the use of mobile access towers and how to avoid them
PASMA towers for users eLearning
Hird can offer the theoretical element of the PASMA towers for users course as an eLearning course.
This is particularly helpful to clients during the COVID-19 pandemic because the learning can be done from home or from a client office.
In general terms, some clients find this useful because their staff spend less time away from the workplace and training planning is more flexible.
Theory training via eLearning is designed to take between 3 and 4 hours.
Course delegates then have up to 90 days to attend one of the four Hird training centres, across the UK, to sit the theory test, participate in practical training and undergoing the practical test.
