Hird training focus: Crane Lifting Operations Supervisor

Hird’s Crane Lifting Operations Supervisor Novice (A62) course gives delegates the opportunity to gain a key qualification needed to develop a successful lifting career – learning from experienced professional instructors.
It is aimed at anyone who is required to supervise safe systems of work using lifting equipment. Delegates who pass the CPCS-accredited course will receive their Red CPCS Trained Operator’s Card.
What experience do I need to attend the course?
It is recommended that delegates attending crane lifting operations supervisor (A62) course should have some experience of working of working with lifting equipment, especially mobile cranes.
They do not have to be a qualified crane operator – experience as a qualified slinger signaller could be a reasonable starting point. All delegates must also have passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) Test to supervisory level or above no more than two years before the course start date.
What is taught on the crane lifting operations supervisor course?
The course lasts four days, with three days of learning and one day of assessment. It covers all aspects of basic crane lifting, with both theoretical and practical learning required.
Content includes legislation, regulations and codes of practice encompassed by BS 7121 (Safe Use of Cranes), crane types, capabilities and limitations and roles and responsibilities of the crane lifting team.
Technical issues covered include duties charts, safe working loads, crane stability and ground conditions, accessories and their down rating, sling angles and the effect on safe working loads.
At the end of the training the candidates will be able to conduct a tool box talk to all involved in the lifting operation and answer questions.
How are delegates assessed?
Up to three delegates are allowed in each course. They undergo a theoretical test and a practical test. With the theoretical test, the assessor asks 68 questions which have to be answered in 60 minutes.
Hird sends all the questions to delegates before they attend the course. This gives them time to carry out personal research, to familiarise themselves with concepts before they arrive.
But only a minority of delegates take advantage of this opportunity and often regret not doing so when they find out how technical and intensive the course is.
What do delegates who pass get?
All those who pass the Crane Lifting Operations Supervisor (A62) course receive a Red CPSC Trained Operator’s Card. This card is valid for two years.
The next step is for crane supervisors to study for an NVQ Level 4 Diploma in Controlling Lifting Operations – Supervising Lifts (Construction). This allows delegates to apply for a Blue CPCS Competent Operator Card, which is valid for five years.
They can also go on to study for their Red CPCS Card Appointed Person (A61) qualification, which is one step above the supervisor role. The Appointed Person puts together the plan for the lift. The crane supervisor is expected to implement the plan.
