New Maeda knuckle boom crane extends lifting capabilities
Hird is delivering a step-change in up-and-over lifting by becoming the first UK hire specialist to take a new Maeda knuckle boom spider crane into its crane hire fleet.
The Maeda MK3053CB ECO delivers a 2.98t maximum safe working load (at 1.8m), a maximum lifting height of 16.98m and a maximum working radius of 14.3m.
It is the spider crane’s ability to work over obstacles that catches the eye, with a working radius of over 12m at a hook height of 8m (SWL 150kg), and a radius of 8.5m at a hook height of 11m (SWL 445kg).
It is also all-electric powered, with a highly-efficient lithium battery, adding significant capability to Hird’s growing fleet of sustainable, zero emissions and low-noise mini cranes.
The first of the new cranes has been delivered to Hird’s Central hub in Doncaster. Maeda supplier Kranlyft UK also hosted an open day to introduce the crane to Hird managers and customers.

Impressive advantages
The impressive up-and-over lifting capability is made possible by a 5-section pentagonal main boom and 3-section telescoping negative angle jib.
Hird Managing Director Phil Hird said: “We’re excited to bring the Maeda MK3053CB ECO into our mini crane hire fleet. We know our customers are going to be impressed by the specific advantages it offers.
“The extra up-and-over lifting capability is clearly going to be one of the biggest plusses, especially where space is constrained.
“That could mean, for example, lifting onto and off mezzanine floors in shops and shopping centres, or lifting glass up to deep balconies in new office and housing schemes.
“A knuckle boom crane like this is also ideal for lifting service equipment onto roofs, where previously a mobile crane might be needed, or working above machinery in a factory or processing plant.”
Constrained space operation
In all these applications, using the Maeda MK3053CB ECO spider crane has the potential to simplify lifts, reducing their disruption and their cost, Phil Hird added.
The spider crane’s flexibility in constrained space is enhanced further by it having automatic, stepless variable outriggers to allow fast and safe set up in complex spaces.
It can be controlled for drive and lifting with a fully proportional wireless radio remote control, so the mini crane operator can be positioned optimally for every lift – a particularly useful advantage for up-and-over applications.
The Maeda MK3053CB ECO’s operating system is fully proportional, with a fully automatic 5-section boom so positioning of the boom and hook is both easier and safer.
Zero-emissions power
As with all Maeda spider cranes, this knuckle boom crane is impressively compact. Just 780mm wide and 1945mm tall when stowed, it can be tracked through most single doors.
Meanwhile, its white non-marking tracks, which mean it can be used indoors and outdoors, can be extended to 1050mm to increase stability when moving the mini crane across unstable or sloping ground.
The Maeda MK3053CB ECO knuckle boom crane’s reliable lithium battery delivers long-lasting and sustained power. It can be fully charged in just five hours and can be charged while operating.
As an all-electric spider crane, it is ideal for working in low-emissions zones and where near-silent operation is essential, for example near schools, hospitals and care homes, as well as at night.
Smart lifting functionality
The mini crane has also been designed to meet all end-user client sustainability specifications – and to contribute to their low-carbon footprint strategies and NetZero 2050 commitments.
Smart functionality contributes to safe, flexible and productive lifting. For example, the spider crane has an electric winch built into the boom post. The jib head has two positions for precision load control, and lifts can be monitored and controlled from a full-colour 7-inch digital screen.
The Maeda MK3053CB ECO’s capabilities align with a wide range of lifting applications, including:
- High level machinery installation, for example air conditioning units on roofs;
- Building maintenance;
- Steel erection;
- Glass installation;
- Cladding (curtainwall) installation;
- Factory maintenance.
Crane operator training
As with all other Maeda spider cranes, it can be combined with a range of lifting accessories, including winches and glass vacuum lifters, which are also available for hire from Hird.
Hird can also provide the crane for hire with an experienced and skilled crane operator, and delivers crane operator training (CPCS Compact Crane A) at each of its three regional operational hubs.
