How a Maeda Spider Crane and Vacuum Lifter Simplify Glazing Installations

How a Maeda Spider Crane and Vacuum Lifter Simplify Glazing Installations

Installing glazing in busy city centre environments requires more than just lifting capacity.

Restricted access, limited working space and the need for safe, precise handling mean contractors need equipment that is both compact and capable.

Hird supplied a Maeda MK3053C knuckle boom spider crane alongside a Kappel DSKZL2 vacuum lifter to support the installation of glazing panels on a university building in Birmingham city centre.

Overcoming Urban Site Challenges

Projects in city centres often present unique logistical challenges.

Tight access routes, confined working areas and the movement of people around the site can all make lifting operations more complex.

For this project, the Maeda MK3053C knuckle boom crane was selected for its ability to deliver high lifting performance from a compact footprint.

Offering a lifting capacity of 2.98 tonnes at 1.8 metres, the spider crane was able to navigate the city centre pavements. Whilst still providing the reach and capacity needed to complete the glazing installation safely and efficiently.

Its compact design makes it well suited to projects where larger cranes are unable to access the working area. Without compromising on lifting performance.

Precision Glass Handling

To complement the spider crane, a Kappel DSKZL2 vacuum lifter was used to safely handle and position the glazing panels.

Capable of lifting glass weighing up to 450kg, when extension arms are added, the vacuum lifter allowed operators to lift, rotate, manoeuvre and accurately position each panel during installation.

Providing 360° rotation and a 90° tilt, this level of control not only improves installation accuracy. But also helps reduce the risks associated with manual handling and minimises the potential for damage to expensive glazing panels.

The combination of the spider crane and vacuum lifter enabled the installation team to work efficiently while maintaining high safety standards throughout the project.

Why Equipment Compatibility Matters

Think of Hird as your matchmakers.

It’s one of our many strengths. Countless lifting projects require more than one specialist machine to complete the job effectively. Selecting equipment designed to work together helps improve productivity, streamline site operations and reduce downtime.

By pairing a spider crane with a glazing vacuum lifter, contractors benefit from:

  • Safe handling of heavy glazing panels
  • Reduced manual handling risks
  • Greater installation accuracy
  • Improved efficiency on restricted sites
  • Faster project completion with fewer delays

Using the right combination of equipment ensures site challenges can be overcome without compromising safety or performance.

All in one place. All from one supplier.
