Glass lifting with mini crane creates one of the UK’s best views

Glass lifting with mini crane creates one of the UK’s best views

Hird has helped builders create one of the best private viewing points in England – certainly on the north east coast – by providing a Maeda spider crane and a glass vacuum lifter to install a giant window.

The lifting specialist was called in to help install the 6-metre by 3-metre window in a new house being built on the clifftops at Whitby, North Yorkshire.

The large art-deco style property was being built the site of a house that had been demolished to make way for the luxury home. And the window, providing views across Whitby Bay to Whitby Abbey, was a key feature.

Impressive sight

Hird’s highly experienced mini crane operator used a Maeda MC305 spider crane combined with a Kappel DSZ2 glass vacuum lifter to lift the window panel that weighed 600kg.

The house is an impressive sight, complete with a circular art-deco turret. But the spider crane lifting in the glass was even more of a draw, with many people, including a local councillor, watching the window being installed.

They were able to see the lift completed smoothly, without a hitch. Not least because the Maeda MC305 was perfect for the job.

The tracked spider crane has a maximum safe working load of 2.98t, a maximum working height of 12.52m and a maximum working radius of 12.16m.

Large glass

As with all Maeda mini cranes, the MC305 is highly compact for its lifting capacity, being just 1280mm wide when stowed for tracking, allowing it to be moved through congested work spaces.

The variable outriggers can then be deployed to provide a flexible and very safe lifting platform. The mini crane can also be operated by remote control, ensuring lifts can be completed with optimum safety.

The DSZ2 glass vacuum lifter has a maximum lifting capacity of 750kg. It is ideal for lifting large sheets of glass because of the wide configuration of its ten suction cups.

While it was not a factor for this lift, the vacuum lifter’s narrow body – it has a depth of just 180mm – makes it very useful for lifting in tight working environments, for example behind scaffold.

A dual circuit vacuum system, with two pumps and two vacuum tanks, makes the DSZ2 glass lifter very safe to use. It also has a low vacuum visual and sound alarm.

The glass vacuum lifter also has powered continuous rotation through 360 degrees and powered tilting through 90 degrees.

Robotic installation

Our lifting operative also used a Winlet glazing robot to install two smaller windows inside the new home, both 3-metres by 2-metres and weighing 200kg.

The Winlet 350 glazing robot has a maximum capacity of 350kg. Its glass manipulator allows panels to be lifted to a height of 2.8m, rotated through 360 degrees and tilted through 180 degree, both manually.

The project demonstrated Hird’s ability to act as a one stop shop for all lifting requirements, with multiple options for cranes and material lifting equipment, along with skilled lifting operatives.
