Anatomy of a knuckle boom spider crane

Anatomy of a knuckle boom spider crane

Flexibility is the watchword for Hird’s Maeda MK305C ECO knuckle boom spider crane – in fact, you could say it is the crane’s super power.

The mini crane combines a main boom that extends to 10.3 metres with a hydraulic three-section telescoping negative-angle jib boom that adds up to a further 4.9 metres of reach.

There are a lot of advantages of this configuration, and the other features associated with this mini crane, which is why it is the focus of our latest Hird Anatomy series.

This gives you the chance to explore the Maeda MK305C ECO by selecting the click buttons to reveal its the hidden secrets – and see why it has been in demand from the day it was added to Hird’s spider crane hire fleet.

The Maeda MK3053CB ECO has a 2.98t maximum safe working load (at 1.8m), plus a maximum lifting height of 16.95m and a maximum working radius of 14.3m.

Perfect for highly constrained spaces

Over one third of that radius is provided by the jib, which can be hydraulically articulated to lift loads in a range of constrained spaces, including under low ceilings or structures.

The jib can also be removed, if necessary, in a suitably ingenious way, without the need for tools. Instead, the outriggers are used to lower the jib to the ground, allowing it to be then wheeled away on castors.

In their usual role, the variable outriggers are step-free and can be placed in locations that best suit worksite conditions, with the crane’s onboard load moment indicator ensuring lifts can continue safely.

Meanwhile, the knuckle boom crane’s proportional controls are operated via a wireless remote control unit, allowing the operator to be positioned in the best location to manage the lift.

But, don’t let us give away all the details! You can find out about them for yourself by exploring the anatomy of an all-electric lithium battery powered knuckle boom spider crane.
