Winlet glazing robots install window of wildlife discovery
Two Winlet glazing robots hired from Hird have been helping to create a stunning viewing area for thousands of people to watch wildlife on the south coast of England.
The Winlet 1000 glazing robots are lifting glass panels weighing 675kg into place in the new Rye Harbour Discovery Centre in East Sussex.
The glass wall installed in the new centre, which will be run by Sussex Wildlife Trust, will provide a clear view across the nature reserve for an estimated 360,000 visitors a year.
Glazing robot – 1 tonne capacity
A façade installation specialist has been using the Winlet glazing robots to safely and quickly install the glass panels. Their glass vacuum lifters can hold loads of up to 1,000kg.
Safety and the ability to coordinate glass installation with the needs of other contractors on worksites like the discovery centre are both vital to the success of such construction projects.
Winlet glazing robots support this process by providing a safe lifting method which greatly reduces the need for manual handling. They can be used to pick up and carry loads, simplifying the installation process.
The lifting machine’s boom can be extended to 2.5 metres, at which distance the glazing robot can hold loads up to 300kg.
Remotely controlled lifting
The glazing robot can be controlled from a tiller at the back of the machine and, when positioned for installation, by a remote-control device, so the operator can be in the best position to view the process.
A smart gyroscopic hydraulic system holds the load in the same plane while the glazing robot’s manipulator head is being moved from side to side or up and down, so it stays in exactly the right position to be installed in an aperture.
The glazing robot can also install glass panels directly overhead to a height of 4.1 metres so is ideal for installing of glazed cupolas and roofs.
Weighing just 1800kg with full counterweights it is also designed for operation across low load bearing floors.
Range of materials lifted
Winlet glazing robots can also be used to lift, carry and install a wide variety of other sheet materials, as well as glass, including glass reinforced concrete, plastic, wood, plasterboard and metal.
Hird, the UK and Ireland distributor for Winlet, has also developed pad extensions so the glazing robot can be used to lift and install mullioned unitised window façade panels.

The Winlet 1000 TRX has the same 1 tonne lifting capacity of the Winlet 1000 but is based on a tracked chassis for installation over rough or sloping terrain.
LEEA glazing robot training
The new Rye Harbour Discovery Centre will create a safe and welcoming place for people to enjoy finding out about the reserve’s wildlife, including parties of children on educational trips. It is due to be officially opened in April 2020.
The centre is costing £2.5m to build. Total project cost is around £4.4m, with much of the money raised coming from public donations, charitable bodies and the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
