Commuters saddle up thanks to Winlet glazing robots

Commuters saddle up thanks to Winlet glazing robots

A drive to promote sustainable commuting with secure and safe cycle storage units deserves an equally sustainable method of construction – Winlet glazing robots from Hird.

The new cycle hub was being installed at Basingstoke train station, in Hampshire, to meet growing demand for easy storage of bicycles, many of them used as part of a daily journey to work.

Glass is the perfect material for building cycle storage units like this as they create environments where the bicycles are secure, the purpose of the unit is clear, and commuters feel safe in a highly visible space.

Directly overhead

Hird provided a Winlet 350 glazing robot and an experienced operator to assist the construction team in lifting and installing the glass.

The glazing robot has a maximum lifting capacity of 350kg. It can also tilt the glass load through 180 degrees and rotate it through 360 degrees.

Its four suction cups hold the glass safely and securely thanks to an independent twin valve system that ensures one system will continue to hold the load if the other fails.

The Winlet 350 glazing robot can lift glass to a height of 2.8m, for installation directly overhead, or 790mm horizontally beyond the front of the machine for easier installation in constrained spaces.

Responsive service

The cycle hub was installed by Kent-based cycle storage specialist Cyclepods. Jon Imeson, one of the company’s project managers, said: Winlet glazing robots are ideal for our glass lifting needs.

“They have very precise controls that make it easier for us to install glass in very limited spaces, which is quite often the way as we work in live public areas like railway and bus stations.

“As a lifting equipment rental company, Hird is also very responsive to our needs, their Winlet glazing robots are kept in good condition and the operators are fantastic, in terms of supporting out teams.”

As a company that champions sustainability, Cyclepods is pleased to be using such a sustainable lifting solution, with electric-powered equipment that minimises manual handling and maximises safety, he added.

The Winlet 350 can be used with a range of accessories. They include twin wheels to boost rough terrain capabilities, stone lifting suction cups and a quick connector set for mains power supply.
