Hird trio become Dirgers for health charity

Hird trio become Dirgers for health charity

Three Hird colleagues have completed a trek across the North Yorkshire Moors in aid of a charity supporting research into cancer, heart disease and dementia.

Richard Tomlinson, Gavin Rymer and Richard Christiansen, pictured left to right, went on the 40-mile Lyke Wake Walk, raising £1,835 in sponsorship for the Daisy Appeal.

They followed a west-to-east route from Osmotherley to Ravenscar, completing the journey across the highest part of the North Yorkshire Moors in sixteen hours.

The achievement qualifies the three foot-sore friends to join the Lyke Wake Club and be called Dirgers. Women who complete the walk are called Witches.

All three are based at the Hird HQ in Hull, where Richard Christiansen is a health and safety officer, Richard Tomlinson is a sales specialist, and Gavin is a training instructor.

Richard Christiansen said: “All three of us took part in the Three Peaks Challenge with Hird colleagues last year and wanted to test ourselves with a new challenge this year.

“We set out just after midnight and completed the walk just after 4pm. Apart from a few blisters the only problem we had was night-time mist making it a bit difficult to see where we were going.”

The trio are now researching their next walking challenge. Richard said: “Now we have the walking bug, we can’t stop!”
