Hird delivers ‘perfect’ overhead glass lifting solution
When safety and productivity count for carrying out overhead glass installation, Hird’s GML 800+ Manipulator is becoming a go-to machine.
This excellent short video of the counterbalance floor crane and glass lifter in action proves the point perfectly.
Roof light and glazing installation specialist Vision AGI videoed one of their teams using the GML 800+ Manipulator to install roof glass at a development in Southwark, London.
The machine was being used to lift panels up through the glazing aperture and back into place, ready to be fixed by two operatives using personnel masts for safe low-level working at height.
Vision AGI Project Director Myles Barrett said: “The GML 800+ Manipulator was perfect for the job. It’s light and compact so quick and simple to move into place, and easy to operate.
“Glass panels can be controlled with precision using the manipulator’s vacuum lifter, and the machine can then be repositioned quickly, with minimal effort to carry out the next lift.
“Our service is defined by excellent safety, high levels of productivity, and quality installation. We want overhead glazing to proceed smoothly and without incident, which can be achieved with this machine.

“The control delivered by Hird’s GML 800+ Manipulator reduces to a minimum the risk of damage to the load or surrounding structures, which is vital for our bespoke installations in high-value environments.”
When the video was published on Linkedin, the glass installation solution impressed freelance IPAF and PASMA instructor Jamie Fleetwood.
He commented: “This is a great answer to when people take risks to get the job done and say: ‘There was no other way. We just had to get it done’. There’s always another way.
“With the right equipment it ends up being quicker, easier and safer. It won’t be cheaper up front. But it’s cheaper than paying the fines and compensation for someone falling off where they were perched.”
The GML 800+ Manipulator has been co-designed by Hird, Wienold and Kappel to create a machine that can lift loads up to 500kg up to a height of 7.9 metres in an overhead position.
The vacuum lifting head has powered 360-degree rotation, powered 90-degree vertical tilt and powered 10-degree lateral tilt, all of which can be delivered via radio remote control.
When stowed for transport, the machine fits into a standard lift, which makes it ideal for both glazing maintenance and refurbishment, as well as supporting new-build projects.
Hird Director John Wilding said: “The GML 800+ Manipulator combines the robustness and simplicity of Wienold’s counterbalance floor crane, with the sophistication and precision of the Kappel vacuum lifter.
“Hird’s knowledge of the needs of our customers is the added ingredient that makes this machine a world-beater when it comes to lifting glass overhead. We’re very pleased Vision AGI finds it so useful.”
