Maeda mini crane and glazing manipulator support hospital build

Maeda mini crane and glazing manipulator support hospital build

Hird has supplied a Maeda spider crane fitted with a glazing manipulator to support the building of a new diabetes centre at Hull Royal Infirmary.

The Maeda MC405 and glazing manipulator attachment accelerates the glass installation project, helping to keep the build plan on schedule and controlling costs.

The £6m new Allam Diabetes Centre build built next to the Women and Children’s Hospital has been funded by Hull City FC owner Dr Assem Allam and will treat patients with diabetes and metabolic bone diseases.

Powerful glazing manipulator

Hird supplied the Maeda MC405 mini crane and glass manipulator, along with a crane operator, to support the glass installation process on the centrepiece atrium.

The Octopus GL-CC777600 vacuum manipulator has a maximum load capacity of 300kg in a four vacuum cup format, increasing to 600kg when four additional suction cups are fitted for larger panels.

The glazing manipulator provides fully powered load manipulation, with 400 slewing left and right, 600 tilt up and down and 950 rotation.

The Oktopus glass manipulator is designed to be fitted to three Maeda spider crane models – the Maeda MC285 CRM-2, the Maeda MC305 and the Maeda MC405.

Confined space lifting

The Maeda MC405 used for this project has a maximum safe working load of 3.83t, a maximum working height of 16.8m (20.7m with a fly jib) and 16 maximum working radius. It also has a 500kg pick and carry duty.

At just 1380mm wide in tracking mode, the spider crane is excellent for working in confined spaces and being moved into position on live sites, for example hospitals, where disruption must be minimised.

Hird Managing Director Phil Hird said: “As a Hull-based lifting company, we were delighted to supply the Maeda spider crane and Octopus glazing manipulator to support the construction of the Allam Diabetes Centre.

“This equipment, combined with our lifting expertise, is an excellent example of how providing the right lifting solution can simplify and streamline glass installation, making it safer and more productive.”
