Here’s the weather – on the hook of a Hird mobile crane

Visitors to Hull’s historical docks are getting their weather reports as light and sound show thanks to mobile crane technology provided by Hird.

The lifting and powered access specialist, based close to the docks, was asked to lift an art installation into Prince’s Dock for a maritime festival.

The Oracle, a 26ft-high light house which can take in weather data from the Met Office, is part of the Navigate Festival from Thursday 30th January to 1st February 2019.

Thousands of visitors are expected in the docks to enjoy the maritime festival which promises a stunning light show across the water and historical buildings.

Ultra-modern mobile crane

A Hird lifting team used the company’s ultra-modern Liebherr LTM1060 3.1 60t mobile crane to lift the Oracle light into position on the water. Every 15 minutes it gives people the local weather forecast through light and sound signals.

Hird Managing Director Phil Hird said: “Our new Liebherr mobile crane was ideal for this lifting job. Despite being a large and very capable crane, it is designed to be operated in confines spaces.

“Access and operating space around the docks, which were not designed for large, modern machinery, is certainly limited, so the mobile crane came into its own.”

The Liebherr LTM1060 3.1 crane has a maximum lifting capacity of 60 tonnes. More important for the task of placing Oracle in the water, was its impressive working height and radius.

The mobile crane has a maximum tip height of 48m, which extends to 63m when its integral jib is deployed.

Independent outrigger configuration

Another major advantage the mobile crane has is its lifting brain – a powerful onboard computer and load limiter system that allows the crane’s outriggers to be configured independently which aids operation in confined spaces and where ground conditions vary.

Its innovative wireless remote control system also enhances the mobile crane’s productivity and safety.

As well as carrying out art installations, the Liebherr LTM1060 3.1 100t mobile crane is busy supporting Hird customers on construction sites and for a variety of maintenance tasks on industrial and power generation sites.
