<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Once in a while, we take Product of the Month off piste to cover stuff that’s not made of metal and would hurt if it ran over your foot.</h2>



<p><strong>We’re doing it now, because our Product of the Month for April is Hird service.</strong></p>



<p>We think it’s important to remember, every now and then, that a product is not just the kit. It is also the smile on the face (seen or sensed over the phone), the helping hand, and the challenge overcome.</p>



<p>It’s a bit of a journey into the intangible. You can see a robotic glass lifter (as long as it is delivered on time). But service can be less easy to define.</p>



<p>So, here we are talking about elements of service that have a direct impact on our customers. That makes sure the kit is delivered on time, and the customer and their client are happy.</p>



<p>The point is, we can all be tempted by a sales pitch. By a bargain. By something new. Here at Hird, we know, in the world of industrial equipment hire, consistency counts.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The curious engineer</strong></h2>



<p><strong>In fact, expertise has always been at the centre of our service. It is epitomised by the development by Peter Hird Snr, who founded the business, of what has become known as the <a href="https://hird.co.uk/service-and-maintenance/the-hird-test-measuring-mewp-battery-endurance">Hird Test</a>.</strong></p>



<p>Back in the 1980s, after a customer complained about the poor battery performance of an access platform, Peter Hird Snr set out to develop a method for checking how long a battery should last for every type and model of MEWP in the fleet.</p>



<p>It was the engineer in him. He wanted to know. That determination, led to a battery endurance test – the Hird Test – that is still used by manufacturers and rental specialists around the world.</p>

Product of the Month – Hird Service

40 years of Hird – the lifting team that won’t let you down

<h2>Glass is getting bigger. Hird is responding by providing clients with the equipment needed to carry these bigger loads.</h2> </h2><p><strong>That is why our <a href="https://hird.co.uk/backend/news/product-of-the-month">Product of the Month</a> for May is the <a href="https://hird.co.uk/backend/products/glass-trolleys/heavy-drive-trolley/">Heavy Drive Trolley</a>, which has a maximum capacity of 3,000kg.</strong></p> <p>To be fair, it is actually two trolleys, cleverly joined together to allow longer and, therefore, heavier pieces of plate and laminated glass to be carried safely to installation site.</p> <p>More on that in a moment.</p> <p>First, though, a bit more on why the <a href="https://hird.co.uk/backend/products/glass-trolleys/heavy-drive-trolley/"><strong>Heavy Drive Trolley</strong></a> is needed.</p> <p></br></p> <h2><strong>Glass technology and design</strong></h2> <p><strong>Advances in glass manufacture and changing tastes in building design have been combining to increase the use of architectural glass in a wide range of buildings, both commercial and domestic.</strong></p> <p>The need to enhance protection and security in large commercial buildings in particular have increased the need for thicker glass to be incorporated in buildings.</p> <p></br></p> <div class="wp-block-image"> <figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><a href="https://hird.co.uk/assets/uploads/2022/09/glass-manufacture-increased-the-need-for-thicker-glass-to-be-incorporated-in-building-hird.jpg"><img src="https://hird.co.uk/assets/uploads/2022/09/glass-manufacture-increased-the-need-for-thicker-glass-to-be-incorporated-in-building-hird.jpg" alt="glass manufacture - Currently we produce, on average, 4.5 tonnes each.</strong></p> <p>It’s an impressive load. Bear in mind, though, that our<strong> <a href="https://hird.co.uk/backend/products/glass-trolleys/heavy-drive-trolley/">Heavy Drive Trolley</a></strong> is designed specifically to carry sheet material.</p> <p>In most cases, this is glass. Product of the Month – Heavy Drive Trolley

<h2>Here at Hird we like nothing better than finding simple solutions to potentially very challenging problems – which is why the Product of the Month for April is our <a href="https://hird.co.uk/backend/products/glass-trolleys/tilting-glass-trolley/">tilting glass trolley</a>.</h2> </h2><p><strong>We have an excellent range of <a href="https://hird.co.uk/backend/products/glass-trolleys">glazing trolleys</a> for glass of all shapes, sizes and weights and, with the <a href="https://hird.co.uk/backend/products/glass-trolleys/tilting-glass-trolley/">tilting glass trolley</a>, we have one that will literally lean into a glass transport problem.</strong></p> <p>Construction sites can pose major problems for glass installers. Obstructions, such as scaffolding poles and boards, as well as machinery, can restrict room for manoeuvre.</p> <p></br></p> <h2><strong>Prevent glazing delays</strong></h2> <p><strong>With a large glass panel on a standard <a href="https://hird.co.uk/backend/products/glass-trolleys">glass trolley,</a> it can be the case that but for a few centimetres of leeway, it is impossible to get around the obstruction, resulting in the need for a long detour or a delay to installation.</strong></p> <p>On top of that, it may be helpful to bring a glass panel to an aperture from one side and fit it from the other. But this may not be possible with a standard glass trolley because it will not fit through the available gap.</p> <p>The <strong><a href="https://hird.co.uk/backend/products/glass-trolleys/tilting-glass-trolley/">Hird tilting glass trolley</a></strong> is designed to overcome these challenges, allowing the glass to be kept securely on the trolley until the moment it is required to be removed and installed in the simplest and safest way.</p> <p></br></p> <h2><strong>Productive glass trolleys</strong></h2> <div class="row"><div class="halfCol col-md-6"> <p><strong>That includes reducing to a minimum the need for manual handling, which exposes operatives to the risk of injury and the glass and surrounding structures to the risk of damage – and slows down the installation process, reducing productivity.</strong></p> <p>What is particularly useful about our tilting glass trolley is how simple it is to operate.</p> <p>The <strong><a href="https://hird.co.uk/backend/products/glass-trolleys/tilting-glass-trolley/">trolley</a></strong> has a maximum safe working load of 600kg and can carry glass panels up to 2.5m in length, so it can be used to move hefty glazed panels. Yet its simple operating system makes it light and compact so it can be used just like any standard glass transport trolley.</p> <p>The tilting mechanism is controlled manually with a winding handle. The trolley can be set up for two tilting ranges.
